چکیده

was found to be an additional growth factor in that this compound can replace the requirement for heme in the presence of vitamin K, allowing good growth of the organism, and succinate can also partially replace the requirement for vitamin K in the presence of heme. The addition of succinate to a medium supplemented with both vitamin K and heme increases the growth rate of the culture. This ability to stimulate growth was specific for succinate, and cells grown without heme but with vitamin K and succinate were insensitive to cyanide. These experiments demonstrate a central role for succinate in the metabolism of B. melaninogenicus.

Nutritional relationships between oral bacteria.

Nutritional relationships were revealed during the coculturing of Bacteroides gingivalis with Wolinella recta and Bacteroides melaninogenicus with W. recta. W. recta produced a substance that stimulated the growth of B. gingivalis and B. melaninogenicus. Characterization by thin-layer chromatography and absorption spectrometry identified the compound as protoheme. Production of large amounts of...

Hemin and vitamin K compounds as required factors for the cultivation of certain strains of Bacteroides melaninogenicus.

In 1921 Oliver and Wherry described ail anaerobic, gram-negative, black pigment-producing rod isolated from human mucous membranes, tonsils, infected surgical wounds, urine, and feces. Since the black pigment formed by the organism growing on blood agar was believed to be melanin, the organism was named Bacterium melaninogenicum. This proved an unfortunate epithet, for Schwabacher, Lucas, and R...

The Fluoretec system for rapid diagnosis of bacteroides infections by direct immunofluorescence of clinical specimens.

Fluoretec, a commercial kit for the rapid diagnosis by immunofluorescence of infections caused by Bacteroides spp was compared with a standard culture method. A total of 1010 specimens were tested for the presence of B fragilis group by Fluoretec F and B melaninogenicus-oralis and asaccharolytic groups by Fluoretec M. Fluoretec F was positive in 123/152 specimens culturing B fragilis group stra...

Enhancement of growth of aerobic and facultative bacteria in mixed infections with Bacteroides species.

The potential for mutual enhancement of growth of the Bacteroides fragilis and B. melaninogenicus groups and the aerobic and facultative organisms commonly isolated with them in mixed infections was evaluated. Enhancement was studied by measuring the relative increase in CFU of the two bacterial components inducing subcutaneous abscesses in mice. Of the 42 combinations between three isolates ea...

Rapid detection and identification of Bacteroides fragilis and Bacteroides melaninogenicus by immunofluorescence.

Bacteroides fragilis group and Bacteroides melaninogenicus group fluorescent-antibody kits were evaluated with 188 clinical specimens and 116 fresh aerobic and anaerobic bacterial isolates. Fluorescent-antibody and culture results corresponded in 88% of clinical specimens of the B. fragilis group and 94% of clinical specimens of the B. melaninogenicus group. There was greater than or equal to 9...
